The museum is intended as a small monument to the neighbourhood’s past history, linked to the leather manufacture that prevailed for centuries and has totally disappeared since.
The collection tells the story of footwear across Europe through the ages with over 400 objects, mainly reconstructions of ancient footwear from Prehistoric times to the pre-industrial era. Besides shoes, there are also objects such as leather cases, money purses, bags and the tools that were needed to make them. The whole collection rests on scientific studies of archaeological artefacts: the material witnesses from the past.
We offer a free tour of the evolution of footwear over the last 5,000 years. The presentation of this unique collection is done by experts on the field willing to share their knowledge. Many visitors appreciate the privilege to personally examine and touch the material and immaterial heritage carefully assembled over the past 25 years.
